Winter squash casserole is a warm, comforting dish that highlights the herbal sweetness and creamy texture of seasonal squash. It’s frequently served as an aspect dish throughout fall and winter meals; however, it may without difficulty stand on its own as a light vegetarian essential. The casserole blends roasted or cooked squash with simple pantry elements like onions, eggs, milk or cream, and a crunchy topping for comparison.

Ingredients (Serves six to eight)

1.2–1.5 kg winter squash (butternut, kabocha, or similar), peeled and cubed

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2–3 tablespoons butter or olive oil

2 eggs

½ cup milk or mild cream

½ cup grated cheese (cheddar, parmesan, or a mixture)

1 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers

1 teaspoon salt (modify to flavor)

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon (non-obligatory, enhances sweetness)

2–3 cloves garlic, minced (non-obligatory)

Fresh herbs like thyme or parsley for garnish

Preparation Steps

1. Cook the squash.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Peel and dice the winter squash. You can steam, boil, or roast it until gentle. Roasting is desired, as it deepens the taste. If roasting, toss the squash with a bit of oil and bake for approximately 25–30 minutes till smooth and gently golden.

2. Prepare the bottom combination.

In a pan, warm butter or oil over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion till tender and barely caramelized, about five–7 minutes. Add garlic if using and cook for every other minute. This bureaucracy is the savory base that balances the squash’s natural sweetness.

3. Mash the squash.

In a massive bowl, mash the cooked squash until typically easy. You can depart a few chunks for texture in case you prefer a country casserole. Add the sautéed onion mixture.
