Winter Squash Casserole

Winter Squash Casserole

Winter squash casserole is a warm, comforting dish that highlights the herbal sweetness and creamy texture of squash. It is frequently served as a side dish throughout autumn and winter food, in particular at one's own family gatherings and excursion dinners. The dish combines mashed or sliced squash with a rich, savory-sweet aggregate and a crunchy topping that bakes right into a golden crust.

Ingredients

4 cups winter squash (butternut, kabocha, or pumpkin), peeled and cubed

2 tablespoons butter

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 eggs, crushed

½ cup milk or cream

½ cup grated cheese (cheddar or parmesan)

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ teaspoon nutmeg (elective, provides warmth)

1 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers

2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter (for topping)

Optional: chopped parsley, thyme, or sage

Instructions

1. Prepare the squash.

Peel and reduce the winter squash into cubes. Boil or steam them for about 10–15 mins until tender. Drain properly and mash till easy, or go barely chunky in case you opt for texture.

2. Cook aromatics.

In a pan, soften butter over medium warmth. Add chopped onion and cook dinner until gentle and translucent. Add garlic and prepare dinner for some other minute. This provides intensity and taste to the casserole.

3. Mix the base.

In a big bowl, integrate the mashed squash, cooked onion and garlic, eggs, milk or cream, cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix until well combined. The eggs help bind everything collectively while baking.

Four. Assemble the casserole.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish lightly with butter or oil. Pour the squash mixture into the dish and unfold lightly.

Five. Add a topping.

In a small bowl, blend breadcrumbs with olive oil or melted butter. Sprinkle evenly over the pinnacle of the casserole. This creates a crispy, golden crust while baked.

6. Bake

Place the dish within the oven and bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the pinnacle is golden brown and the casserole is set inside the center.

7. Serve

Let it cool for five–10 mins before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Tips & Variations

Add roasted carrots or candied potatoes for extra sweetness.

Use coconut milk rather than dairy for a lighter or dairy-free model.

Add chopped nuts like pecans for extra crunch.

Mix in spinach or kale for an extra nutritious dish.
